I have always been fascinated with birds, their ability to travel where they want and soar at will. We too can soar if we want to. Many years ago I was giving a talk at a university in China on Whitehead’s philosophy.  At the end of my talk there was time for questions and a student from the school of business administration raised his hand and asked: “You have studied philosophy.  I have a serious question for you.  Do you think that life has a purpose?”

There was nothing cynical about his question.  He was not challenging me to prove that life has a purpose.  He was not trying to impress his peers.  There was a purity in voice, a freshness. I asked him to explain to me what experiences gave rise to his question.
